Call for Submissions
Living Arts Centre Gallery

Exhibition Dates: May 1 – May 23, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 6 ~ 7 - 9pm

The Living Arts Centre invites contemporary artists to submit works for an exhibition celebrating the influence of Japanese practices on artwork today. Artists from all disciplines are asked to examine the traditional art forms of Sumi-e (brush painting) and Ikebana (floral/plant-based sculpture) and create reactionary artworks bringing to light important cross-cultural exchanges.

In traditional practice, both Sumi-e and Ikebana employ a variety of aesthetic principles that have long inspired artists from around the world. Through a disciplined studio regimen, these artists sought to achieve spatial harmony within their compositions, stripping away the subject to reveal its most fundamental form, its true elemental nature.

Artists are permitted to work in all media including 2D, 3D and time-based formats.

To submit, each artist must provide the following information by Monday, March 1, 2010.

1) 1 - 5 digital image submissions (72 dpi preferred)
2) Brief artist statement describing the Japanese influence on your work (500 words or less)
3) Current artist CV

*Priority will be given to those artists who submit earliest*
