Inside the Colonnade, a Brutalist architectural landmark of Toronto ’s 1960s, an elegant facility designed by Yabu Pushelberg has been providing a welcoming space for public encounters with Japanese culture since 1995. Inspired by Japanese handcraft and traditional interiors, this venue is far beyond a mere cultural centre. Waving walls and lights coming through squares and circles create a whimsical, gentle atmosphere.

The Japan Foundation Library and the new gallery exhibition, Tenugui Towels: Design Excellence in Japanese Daily Life, will be open to the public on both days.

Japanese people have been enjoying endless design opportunities by putting their creativity on the 34 cm X 90 cm (3:1 ratio) surface of cotton cloth. With the invention of the CHUSEN (pouring) dyeing technique, TENUGUI towels gained broad distribution and an extremely wide variety of designs became available. Contemporary creators and distributors are expanding the potential of this tradition even further. Kazuhiro Kato will discuss the design, manufacture and uses of tenugui.
